Buying guide

How to choose a mouthguard

In BJJ the hits are accidental: a knee in a scramble, a head in a guard pass. A mouthguard is cheap insurance against chipped teeth and cut lips.

The trade-off is breathing. Classic boil-and-bite guards are bulky, which makes breathing through your mouth harder mid-roll; thinner guards like the SISU Max let you talk and breathe normally. If you want the best possible fit, a dentist can make a custom guard.

What to check

  • Thickness: thin to breathe, thick for padding
  • Fit: remouldable guards forgive a bad first fit
  • Kids: a guard they like the look of is a guard they'll wear
  • Best fit of all: a custom guard from your dentist

Questions

Quick answers

Do you need a mouthguard for BJJ?

It isn't required in most gyms, but it's a good idea. Accidental knees and heads happen in scrambles, and a mouthguard costs far less than a dental repair.

What is the best mouthguard for BJJ?

The SISU Max 2.4 mm is the pick reviewers rate highest for grappling: thin enough to talk and breathe through, and remouldable up to 20 times.

Which mouthguard is best for kids' BJJ?

Gel Max comes in Youth (10 and under) and Adult (11 and over). It is not compatible with braces. Choose the correct size and follow the exact product's fitting instructions. Flavoured editions are separate variants.
