Buying guide
How to choose a belt
Your gym promotes you, but the belt itself is yours to choose. For competition the IBJJF is strict about the basics: 4 to 5 cm wide, your rank colour with a black bar (white or red for black belts), wrapped twice and tied with a double knot, with each end hanging 20 to 30 cm.
Beyond that you can personalise. Embroidered names, stitched degrees and academy logos are common, and the IBJJF uniform rules say nothing against them.
What to check
- Width: 4 to 5 cm for IBJJF
- Feel: a soft cotton belt ties more easily than a stiff one
- Custom: name, degrees and logo can be embroidered
- Lead time: custom belts are made to order and usually can't be returned
Questions
Quick answers
Can I get my name embroidered on my BJJ belt?
Yes. Makers like ChokeSports embroider names or short phrases in English or Japanese. IBJJF permits embroidery after the knot, not elsewhere on the belt. Printing on the belt body is not allowed; manufacturer labels belong at the tip. Confirm the layout before ordering a non-returnable custom belt.
How wide does a BJJ belt have to be?
The IBJJF requires a belt 4 to 5 cm wide.
What colour is the bar on a BJJ black belt?
The IBJJF calls for a white or red bar on a black belt. Every other rank uses a black bar.
