Buying guide
How to choose finger tape
Gi grips are hard on fingers, and tape is how grapplers keep sore joints training. BJJ tape is usually narrow, around 8 to 9 mm (0.3 inch), so it can wrap a single joint, and most is cotton or rayon with a zinc oxide adhesive.
Avoid stretchy kinesiology tape for finger joints: the point is to limit how far the joint bends, and stretchy tape doesn't. Tape sticks best to clean, dry skin.
What to check
- Width: about 8 to 9 mm for single joints
- Material: rigid cotton or rayon, not stretchy
- Adhesive: high tack if your hands sweat
- Apply to: clean, dry skin
Questions
Quick answers
What width finger tape is best for BJJ?
Most BJJ tape is about 8 to 9 mm (0.3 inch) wide, narrow enough to wrap a single finger joint. A variety pack lets you try a few widths.
Can I use kinesiology tape on my fingers for BJJ?
It's not recommended. Kinesiology tape is designed to stretch, and finger tape for grappling needs to be rigid to limit how far the joint bends.
