Buying guide

How to choose grappling shorts

Good no-gi shorts stay up, don't tear when someone grabs them, and leave your legs free to move. The waistband matters most: an elastic or silicone-lined band is more comfortable than a stiff one with a big hook-and-loop closure.

For IBJJF no-gi, men's shorts must reach at least halfway down the thigh and no further than the knee, with no pockets, buttons, zips or exposed drawstrings, in black, white or your belt colour. Compression shorts can go underneath.

What to check

  • Waistband: elastic or silicone-lined beats stiff and Velcro
  • Movement: stretch panels and side slits
  • Length: mid-thigh to knee for IBJJF
  • Underneath: compression shorts if the slits run high

Questions

Quick answers

What length shorts are IBJJF legal?

Men's shorts must reach at least halfway down the thigh and no further than the knee. They can't have pockets (unless sewn shut), buttons, zips, exposed drawstrings or any plastic or metal that could injure an opponent.

Can I wear spats in IBJJF no-gi?

Women can wear spats, shorts and/or compression shorts. Men must wear board shorts, with compression shorts allowed underneath.

What are the toughest BJJ shorts?

The Hayabusa Icon is the pick for durability: a hands-on reviewer found its high-strength polyester has no stretch but is nearly impossible to tear.
