What to Wear to Your First BJJ Class

Your first BJJ class is nerve-racking enough without worrying about your clothes. Here's what to wear, what to leave at home, and what to buy later.

First, ask the gym

Every gym is different, and most are happy to tell you what to bring. Many lend a gi for a first gi class. Some ask beginners to start in no-gi kit. A quick message saves a lot of guessing.

If it's a gi class

If the gym lends you a gi, wear a T-shirt or rash guard under it (most gyms are fine with this in class) and comfortable underwear. If they don't, you'll need your own. A pre-shrunk starter gi like the Fuji All Around is the usual recommendation, and most gis come with a white belt. See the best gis.

If it's a no-gi class

For a first class, fitted athletic clothes usually work: a snug T-shirt or rash guard and shorts or leggings without pockets or zips. Loose clothes snag fingers and toes, so tighter is better.

Once you sign up, buy a proper rash guard and a pair of grappling shorts, which are built to be grabbed.

Leave these at home

  • Anything with zips, buttons or pockets: they can catch fingers or scratch a partner.
  • Jewellery: rings, earrings, watches and necklaces come off.
  • Long nails: trim fingernails and toenails before class. Your partners will thank you.

Bring these

  • Water.
  • Flip-flops or sliders, for walking off the mat. Shoes stay off it.
  • A mouthguard, if you have one. A thin guard like the SISU Max 2.4mm is easy to breathe through.
  • A towel and a bag for sweaty kit.

After class

Wash everything you trained in after every session, even if it doesn't look dirty. Mats and sweat are a perfect home for skin infections. Our beginner gear checklist covers what to buy next.

FAQ

What should I wear to my first BJJ class?

Ask the gym first, since many lend a gi. Otherwise, wear fitted athletic clothes without zips, buttons or pockets, take off any jewellery, and trim your nails.

Can I wear a T-shirt to BJJ?

For a first no-gi class, a snug T-shirt is usually fine. Once you train regularly, a rash guard is better: it stays put, dries faster and protects your skin.

Do I need shoes for BJJ?

Not on the mat, where everyone trains barefoot. Bring flip-flops or sliders for walking to and from the mat.
